We had this published in the Gazette on May 26th

Fans were everywhere – and so was the litter!
We now have a Premier League football club. Let’s have a Premier League Resort to match.
Can we please address the issues of rubbish and dog mess? These together with the vagrants and drunks, portray our town in such a terrible way to our visitors.
First impressions count.
With both the international and domestic media putting the town in the spotlight, not to mention the predicted increase in visitors, it would be such a shame if our enduring image is one of dirty litter-strewn streets.
Our town thrives on self publicity. An ‘own goal’ would be a tragedy. So please, council, invest in a huge clean up now before the chance is gone.

To Gordon Marsden MP re: Blackpool Core Strategy

Sir,

With reference to the proposal for the reduction of quality hotel streets like Reads Avenue, Palatine Road, Adelaide Street, Crystal Road and others Blackpool Council have decided to remove the protection of the holiday zone.

Many of these small business (Hotels and Other Accommodation types) in these areas have spent lots of money over the years improving their property in order to give their guests a quality stay with the personal and friendly atmosphere. The streets mentioned have more than half to three quarters holiday accommodation and by removing the protection some of the property will become HMO’s, and thus lower the quality of the property within the same street which, in turn, will reduce the value of the property that over many years the business owners have built up.

We also have viewed other fan sites and think quite a few of them have got a little …confrontational.

(actually we’ll be running it for the Premier League also but that’s another story)

Do You Offer Wi-Fi to Guests?

Do you offer wi-fi to guests? I’m sure you’re getting asked this question more frequently from your potential guests.

If you already have a broadband connection then it’s not going to cost you anything extra to offer after the initial purchase of a wireless router or switch.

I know a few of our members already offer wi-fi but many perhaps lack the technical expertise of setting this up for themselves.

It’s not very hard to install but its the kind of thing that would be hard for us to put a help file together on as the various types of equipment which you can buy will all have different settings. 

We were approached by Adam Gough to offer our members a wi-fi installation service. Before we passed on his details we had a quick interview to make sure the equipment he was installing and the service he was offering was up to scratch.

It certainly seems to be. He’s very knowledgable and has gained a “Microsoft Certified Professional” status. The equipment he is providing whilst not tested by us certainly looks good for the job and offers WPA encryption (rather than the older WEP).

Adam will install the wi-fi router, make it secure and provide sufficient relay aerials to cover ALL your rooms for £85. Further he’ll also offer his mobile number for a support service if your guests have problems logging on …which you can pass on to your guests.

We CAN recommend his service for those that lack the technical expertise to do it themselves.

Pay Smart Holidays

A member reported to us (via another member) last week that she couldn’t contact them after she had given them a cheque and signed up.   The number they had given her was not obtainable.  She cancelled the cheque.

Following a general warning via our newsletter we were contacted by  Tim Jones, Managing Director PaySmart, Hawk Jensen Group Ltd asking for the opportunity to relay to members that his company was bonafide.

We asked him for more details about his scheme so that we could investigate further.

To date no reply has been made.

If they contact us we’ll report further but we’re not going to waste our time chasing them up for more information.

We have spoken to Tim Jones and will be arranging a meeting soon so he can give us answers on how his business model works.

If we feel it’s a good business model and would help hotels we will let you know but cannot comment at the moment until we meet up with him.

Further Update

We had arranged a meeting for 2:30pm today, Thursday 3rd June at The Warehouse, Cross St, Blackpool.  Mr Jones failed to show.

We’ll continue to give Mr Jones an opportunity to explain his scheme to us via email or face to face but in the meantime we feel duty bound to inform our members that they should be careful.

Update 7th June 2010

We met with Mr Jones today. He explained how the business works and how, owing to health problems and delays at the printers from copy problems caused by the advertisers, and so, he believes, beyond his control, there have been significant delays in completion of the web site and the distribution of the material advertising Blackpool hotels to potential ‘Pay Smart’ guests.

Mr Jones has assured us that the web site will be fully operational and that, the, now printed, sales literature will be distributed during the course of this week (Commencing – Monday 7th June 2010). It should be noted that Mr Jones’ scheme was launched in November 2009 and he admits that no hotels have yet, at 7th June 2010 (7 months later)  actually received a booking directly from ‘Pay Smart’ even though a number of hotels have paid substantial deposits during the winter months.

We are very actively monitoring the situation and will report any developments. Mr Jones has promised to keep us appraised. We suggest that anyone contacted by ‘Pay Smart’ should, as with all important business decisions, continue to consider their options carefully.
